In-Home Care - Bathing & Hygiene Assistance

Eldercare clients appreciate the attention of their caregiver at bath time! For some clients, bathing assistance may be simply the extra bit of help getting in and out of the tub safely and for others it may be total assistance with bathing, dressing and grooming. All Eldercare Systems clients are reminded that it is always wise to bathe when there is someone else in the home. However, when an Eldercare client chooses to bathe when home alone, the family is reassured because Eldercare clients wear a waterproof Eldercare Emergency Alert System and can call for help in case of a fall or other emergency.

Eldercare CNAs know the proper way to assist in bathing; whether it is bed bathing, showering or tub bathing. They know the importance of good skin care and nail care after the bathing and will assist with lotions and manicures or pedicures. Bathing has special importance for people who are incontinent and wear protective garments.

The odds of remaining at home and avoiding hospital visits and nursing home placement may be greatly increased if we accept the fact that 70% of home accidents occur in the bathroom and if we are proactive in preventing injuries. Wet smooth surfaces make taking a bath or shower a risky proposition. Slip and falls account for over 20,000 deaths per year (the second leading cause of accidental death and disability behind car accidents) and over 75% of slip-fall deaths occur to people 65 or older.

The need for proper hygiene is universal. Proper bathing and good personal hygiene is paramount to a person’s overall health and mental outlook. Age-related disability, disease, depression and other factors may present enormous obstacles to bathing and grooming. When one is clean and well-presented they just naturally feel better about themselves and social interaction.
